GENERAL PROPERTIES:-
Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade, combining good corrosion resistance and formability characteristics with useful mechanical properties. Its ability to resist nitric acid attack permits its use in specific chemical applications but automotive trim and appliance components represents its largest fields of application.
Grade 430F is the free-machining version of this grade, available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 is the molybdenum bearing version of Grade 430 and has the same useful combination of properties. Its molybdenum addition improves corrosion resistance.
These properties for 430 are specified for flat rolled product (plate, sheet and coil) in ASTM A240/A240M. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products such as forgings and bar in their respective specifications. Properties of Grade 430F are specified for bar in ASTM A582.
APPLICATIONS:-
Typical applications for 430 grade include:
- Linings for dish washers
- Refrigerator cabinet panels
- Automotive trim
- Lashing Wire
- Element Supports
- Stove trim rings
- Fasteners
- Chimney Liners
Typical applications for 430F grade include:
- Repetition machined components
CORROSION RESISTANCE:-
Grade 430 has good resistance to a wide variety of corrosive enviornments, including nitric acid and some organic acids. It attains its maximum corrosion resistance when in the highly polished or buffed condition. In general its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is close to that of grade 304. Stress corrosion cracking resistance of Grade 430 is very high, as it is for all ferritic grades.
Like other high-sulphur free machining grades 430F has much reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to its non-free machining equivalent.
HEAT TREATMENT:-
- Solution Annealing – Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C and then quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical anneal – Heat to 760-815°C and then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:-
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat affected zone can be relieved by a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C
- Grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:-
- Easier to machine than the standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- Still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining version of 430, is very much easier to machine.
FABRICATION:-
- Lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier than for grade 304
- Lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be made with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is possible.

POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE GRADES:-
In the table below are a list of possible alternative grades to Grade 430.
Grade | Reason it may be chosen instead of 430 |
---|---|
430F | Higher machinability than 430 is needed in bar product, and reduced corrosion resistance is acceptable. |
434 | Better pitting resistance is required |
304 | Slightly higher corrosion resistance is needed, together with greatly improved ability to be welded and cold formed |
316 | Much better corrosion resistance is needed, together with greatly improved ability to be welded and cold formed |
3CR12 | A lower corrosion resistance is acceptable in a cost-critical application |

Fittings and Flanges for Stainless Steel Pipe
Stainless steel piping systems can be joined by butt welding and, in the heavier 40S and 80S schedules, with threaded connections.
BUTT WELDING STAINLESS STEEL PIPE FITTINGS
Harsh steel stocks butt welding fittings in the following configuration.
- Elbows 45 degree and 90 degree - long radius and short radius.
- Return bends 180 - long radius and short radius.
- educers - concentric and eccentric.
- Tees - equal and reducing.
- Caps.
- Stub ends - Type B.
Advantages of stainless steel butt Weld fitting to the pipe are to keep pipes permanently leak proof. The continuous structure helps strength between pipes and fittings. It reduces pressure and also minimises the action of corrosion and erosion. Butt welding fittings can be supplied in either seamless or welded construction and are covered by specifications ASTM A403M and ASTM A815M for Duplex grades.
STAINLESS STEEL SCREWED AND SOCKET WELD FITTINGs
Stainless steel piping systems can be connected using stainless steel screwed fittings - BSP threaded ("150lb") low pressure stainless steel fittings and NPT class 3000 high pressure stainless fittings in Grade 316. Socket weld fittings are used in high pressure piping systems and available in grade 316L to suit schedule 80S wall thickness piping.
MANUFACTURING SPECIFICATIONS:
- ASTM A182M (3000lb NPT and socket weld).
- ANSI B16.3 (BSP dimensions)
- ISO 4144 (BSP dimensions)
STAINLESS STEELS FITTINGS AND FLANGES:
A flange is a ring of steel (forged, cut from plate, or rolled) designed to connect sections of pipe, or to join pipe to a pressure vessel, valve, pump or other integral flanged assembly. Flanges are joined to each other by bolts, and to the piping system by welding or threading (or loose when stub ends are used). Forged stainless steel flanges are designed to the following common pressure ratings, stainless steel flanges are exported by Harsh Steel in Classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500. Standard sealing face is Raised Face (RF).
The basic types of flanges are:
- Stainless steel slip-on flange
- Stainless steel socket weld flange
- Stainless steel blind flange
- Stainless steel lap joint flange
- Stainless steel weld neck flange
- Stainless steel threaded flange
- Stainless steel orifice Flange
Manufacturing specification: ASTM A182M
Plate stainless steel flanges are cut and machined from plate - Table 'D', Table 'E', etc.
Manufacturing specification: AS2129.
Types and applications of Stainless steel and Nickel alloy flanges
Slip-on flanges | The flange is slipped over the pipe and then welded both inside and outside to provide sufficient strength and prevent leakage. Slip-on flanges are also used as loose back-up flanges when stub ends are used. |
Blind flanges | This is a flange without a centre bore, used to shut off a piping system or vessel opening |
Weld neck flanges | This is a flange without a centre bore, used to shut off a piping system or vessel opening |
Lap joint flanges | This is again similar to a slip-on flange, but has a radius at the intersection of the centre bore and the flange face to accommodate a lap stub end. |
